Fgers Memorial Veterans Hospital, Bedford, Massachusetts. Effects of sertraline on the affect and food refusal of patients with advanced dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT) are reported. Out of 10 patients with depressed affect, sertraline improved affect in eight. Six of these patients were also refusing food, and sertraline diminished food refusal in five of them. A case report of a patient who had a dramatic improvement in response to sertraline treatment is presented.
